Spotlight on the 2026 Masters: Rory McIlroy Triumphs Again:

‍ ‍

As if his breakthrough win at Augusta in 2025 wasn't enough, Rory McIlroy went back-to-back at golf's most iconic venue to firmly cement his standing as one of the game's greatest players. A four-time major winner before last year's tournament, McIlroy went 11 years between majors before finally completing a career Grand Slam at the 2025 Masters. Last year, he overcame a tough start in the first round and put together an impressive final round, ultimately beating Englishman Justin Rose in a playoff.

With the weight of expectation and the goal of a career Grand Slam in his rear view, McIlroy looked as comfortable as ever at Augusta in 2026. He had a solid opening round, shooting a 5-under 67 to tie Sam Burns for the lead and was either first or shared the lead in the next two rounds. He held off a late charge from Scottie Scheffler in the final round, shooting a 1-under 71 to secure a one-stroke victory and $4.5 million in prize money.

No Playoff Needed

While he only won by one stroke, Sunday's final round at Augusta wasn't as stressful for McIlroy this time around. That's because, as he said himself, he did the bulk of the work in the first two rounds. He played particularly well in round two, shooting a 7-under 65 to jump out to a six-stroke lead over Burns and Patrick Reed. A score of even par in the next two rounds was enough to hang on for the green jacket.

The final round wasn't completely stress-free for McIlroy. He lost his share of the lead after recording a double bogey at the par-three 4th hole and dropped another shot at the 6th. However, he responded with back-to-back birdies and was one shot back of the leader after the 9th hole.

Rose, who lost to McIlroy in a playoff at the 2025 Masters, was in the lead early on the back nine, but struggled through the famed Amen Corner and shot a 2-under 70 to finish at 10-under, two strokes behind McIlroy. Cameron Young and Burns, McIlroy's closest challengers after the third round, both shot 1-over 73 in the final round.

McIlroy took advantage of their mistakes, making key birdies at the 12th and 13th holes. He had a two-shot lead over Scheffler as he approached the final hole and made an impressive up-and-down from a greenside bunker for a bogey and one-shot victory.

Fourth Back-to-Back Masters Winner

With his 2026 Masters Tournament victory, McIlroy is just the fourth player in the history of the sport to win in consecutive years at Augusta. Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo, three of the game's all-time greats, are the only others to win back-to-back Masters in the tournament's 90-year history.

Nicklaus was the first player to achieve the feat, winning the Masters in 1965 and 1966. He cruised to victory at Augusta in 1965, shooting a 17-under for a nine-stroke victory over second-place finishers Gary Player and Arnold Palmer. He repeated as champion the following year in an 18-hole playoff against Gay Brewer and Tommy Jacobs.

More than 30 years later, Faldo became the second repeat Masters champion when he won the 1990 tournament in a playoff against Raymond Floyd. He won the previous year in a playoff against Scott Hoch.

Meanwhile, Woods won in 2001 and 2002. His victory in 2001 marked his fourth consecutive major title. He shot 12-under in 2002, beating runner-up Retief Goosen by three strokes.

Sixth Career Major

While it's unlikely that McIlroy will come close to the record 18 majors won by Nicklaus from 1962 to 1986, his sixth major victory moved him into a tie for 12th all-time with Faldo, Lee Trevino, and Phil Mickelson. With three more major victories he would move into the top-five, tied with Player and Ben Hogan.

"I feel like I'm in a really good spot with my game and my body," McIlroy said when asked about career expectations. "I don't want to put a number on it, but I feel like this win is just—I don't want to say a stop on the journey, but yeah, it's just a part of the journey. I still have things I want to achieve, but I still want to enjoy it as well."

McIlroy is just 37 years old and still in the prime of his career. Nicklaus won four majors after his 37th birthday.

Other Notable Players

Scheffler, a two-time green jacket winner and one of the opening round favorites to win, recorded his fifth consecutive T10 finishes at Augusta. He followed up a 70-74 start to shoot 65-68 over the weekend to finish at 11-under. Rose and Young were T3 along with Russell Henley and Tyrrell Hatton, all of whom were chasing their first green jacket.

Burns, who had a share of the lead after the first round, finished T7 with Collin Morikawa. Max Homa and Xander Schauffele finished T9 at 8-under.
